Cluster Bulb Lighting.
Some findings of energy and light
effect experiments in regard to efficiency and suitability of multiple high
output Light Emitting Diode tight cluster lighting and there psychological
effects for your perusal.
White LED clusters are
more energy efficient than Low energy mini fluorescents;
White LED clusters to give roughly equivalent to a 100 watt tungsten light bulb
were harsh/cold in psychological effect so various mixes with other color types
were tried. For a more pleasant and restful light, comparable somewhat to
tungsten, a mix of orange LED's in various number combinations pooled with white
LED's was most affective. Equal mix of orange and white LED clusters was a very
kind and gentle warming experience with lesser mix of orange LED's to white
giving a gentle tint which was also found to be acceptable and giving greater illumination.
Making 'kind light' LED
clusters;
The brightest acceptable mix of orange to white was seen with 3 number 1.5 watt
white led spot clusters to 1 number orange 1.5 watt spot cluster giving somewhat
similar to 100 watt tungsten although the led lit area was pooled rather than as
the unidirectional tungsten bulb. Power usage was 4.5 watt compared to 100 watt
for tungsten or 20 watt for UK low energy mini fluorescent bulb although the
light was pooled rather than omni-directional.
LED clusters more energy
efficient than Sodium Orange;
At the present time the cost of these types of LED clusters are very expensive
at approximately £10 each (25-30 watt equiv tung) but no doubt, as with the UK
low energy mini fluorescent bulbs, the price will reduce with greater demand.
The greater demand should ensue with findings on non capable low energy mini fluorescents
in present external movement switched security control fittings which can only
usually use energy inefficient tungsten bulbs. LED cluster bulbs CAN be used in
security switched outside lighting and use much less energy than the low energy
non compatible type. Further experiments then ensued to find the most efficient
LED cluster types for external use as follows;
Ultra Ultra low energy
outside lighting;
White light is composed of energy spread across the light spectrum. If the same
amount of energy is concentrated in one primary color then the
brightness/illumination and energy efficiency of the light is increased. Yellow
is a primary color and was found to be the most effective in external
illumination, even more so than the usual orange sodium bulb street light type.
Ultra pure LED yellow accurate frequency light output clusters were tried with
great success and real energy savings ensued compared to all lighting except
sodium orange which was slightly less expensive in the long term. The main point
observed by this experiment was that sodium orange types had to be on constantly
for comparison and cannot be used in presently fitted auto detection switched
outside security fittings. The yellow LED cluster light used in presently fixed
security fittings produced a somewhat ice crisp cold psychological effect but
was found reasonable enough in application with ensuing greater savings than
with sodium orange constantly on, white LED clusters, auto switched tungsten and
Halogen (Halogen bulbs and there power droppers get very hot and are well known
to have caused fires especially when used inside buildings).
Conclusions;
As internal and some external domestic/commercial light fittings take Bayonet,
ES or SES bulbs then the following LED tight cluster bulb types ought to be auto
mass produced -
1. 4.5 watt
LED tight cluster bulb (100 watt tungsten equivalent) with 25% orange 75% white
mix,
2. 3 watt LED
tight cluster bulb (66 watt tungsten
equivalent) with 25% orange 75% white mix,
3. 3 watt pure
yellow LED tight cluster bulb for presently fitted external domestic sensor
light use.
All to a small usual size of and with the
equivalent Bayonet, ES and SES types applicable.
Recommendation;
Failing all the above just the 4.5 watt 25% orange 75% white mix omni
directional LED ultra tight cluster bulb (or just sides and below illumination
for ceiling pendant) ought to soon be available for internal domestic use to
replace of the normal 100 watt bayonet fitting tungsten and 20 watt mini fluorescent
bayonet bulbs. With greater mass production, more prevalent use and availability
the price of these types of bulb would reduce. Bear in mind that normal tungsten
and Halogen bulbs may later be made illegal by European and UK Governments.
